生产过程中的危害呼吸器官的因素，主要有生产性粉尘和生产性化学毒物两大类。工作场所这两类因素中任何一种或多种浓度超过卫生标准，都会对作业者的健康造成影响。粉尘（尤其是工业性粉尘）是对人体健康造成最大的职业危害因素之一，不是所有的粉尘都会被人体吸收。长期悬浮在空气中的、粉尘颗粒越细的，越容易被人体吸入，特别是小于5μm的呼吸性粉尘，会直接进入肺泡并沉积，导致矽肺病，轻则丧失劳动能力，重则死亡。
